Inline Pressure Balance Expansion Joint

They are intended to absorb externally imposed axial movement without putting the system under pressure. This is performed by connecting two bellows at line pressure and acting in opposite directions. It is utilised when the pressure loading on the piping or equipment is too high. While the joint balances the pressure forces, it does not balance the force required to move the joint.

During operation, both the flow and balancing bellows are compressed or stretched, and the total axial spring force acts on the piping or equipment. Because the forces required to move the bellows of in-line pressure balanced expansion joints are small, these are usually not an issue. These joints are typically installed during a direction change. They may also be intended for in-line use. The in-line pressure balanced expansion joint is an expensive equipment due to its complexity. Its use is only economically justified when the issues caused by the pressure loading are significantly more expensive.

The in-line pressure balanced bellows is a one-of-a-kind design that absorbs thermal motion while eliminating pressure thrust loads on a piping system without changing the direction of the piping. It consists of a constant volume device created by the addition of a balancing bellows whose cross sectional area is exactly twice that of the line or flow bellows.

The change in volume of the line or flow bellows due to change in length (i.e. due to compression or extension) can be made to cause an equal but opposite change in the volume of the balancing bellows by proper cross linking. Thus, because the volume changes are of equal value, the pressure thrust forces that are normally present in the piping system containing bellows expansion joints are eliminated. In-line pressure balanced expansion joints are utilised when the placement of the expansion junction makes installing main anchors impossible or prohibitively expensive.
